Jeff Graveline is an Associate Librarian and Reference Librarian for Business at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Mervyn H. Sterne Library. He holds a BA in History from Virginia Tech and a JD and MLIS from the University of Alabama.
Jeff is a member of the UAB Copyright Working Group and the UAB Scholarly Communications Working Group. He regularly presents lectures and workshops on copyright, author rights and fair use. He is also a contributor to Choice: Current Review for Academic Libraries. Jeff writes a regular column, Copyright and Academia, in the journal College & Undergraduate Libraries. He also serves on the Editorial Board for that journal.
Jeff is active in the Special Libraries Association (SLA), an international organization representing information professionals around the world. He chaired the College and University Business Libraries (CUBL) Section of SLA‘s Business & Finance Division and is currently serving a 3-year term on the SLA Student and Academic Affairs Advisory Council and previously served on the Public Policy Advisory Council. He is also a member of the Business & Finance Division Executive Board where he serves as the Director / Professional Development Chair and Editor of the B & F Bulletin. Jeff won the 2012 SLA Outstanding Achievement in Academic Business Librarianship Award. He also developed the Business Research Certificate Program at UAB which won the Springshare Innovation in Academic Libraries Award.
Jeff also serves as Chair of the UAB Faculty Senate Governance & Operations Committee. He was previously the Faculty Senate Parliamentarian.
Jeff’s previous library experience includes being Director of News Research at The Tuscaloosa News and Customer Support Librarian at VTLS in Blacksburg, Virginia. He also teaches as an adjunct instructor at the University of Alabama School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) where his courses include Academic Librarianship, Law Librarianship, Business Librarianship, General Reference, and User Instruction. He also taught Advanced Legal Writing at the Birmingham School of Law.
While in law school, Jeff was a Senior Editor on the Alabama Law Review and a member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society. He is also a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity.
Prior to joining the Sterne Library faculty, Jeff was an Associate Attorney with Hand Arendall, LLC in Birmingham, Alabama and a law clerk to the Honorable Tamara O. Mitchell, United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama. He is active in the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and currently serves as President of the Alumni Association’s Birmingham Chapter.
