Business Research Certificate Program Fall 2014

The Sterne Library is excited to once again offer the Award Winning Business Research Certificate Program during the fall 2014 term. The program will introduce you to business resources and research strategies.  It is open to ALL current UAB students, faculty, and staff.

Registration is NOW CLOSED.

How does it work? The program consists of eight 50 minute sessions. Each session will be offered twice during the fall 2014 term and again during the spring 2015 term.

To successfully complete the program and receive the Business Research Certificate, you must attend at least 6 sessions (either in the fall or spring term).  If you completed any sessions during the spring 2014 term, they will be counted toward your total in the spring.

When does class meet?  Each session is offered 2 times each week to accommodate students’ varying schedules.  The class will meet in Room 163 of the Sterne Library from 10:00 a.m. until 10:50 a.m.  The session will be repeated at 3:30 p.m. until 4:20 p.m. each day.  We will meet on the followings days to cover these topics:

  • 9/4 – Introduction to Business Research Methods
  • 9/11 – Basic Company Research
  • 9/18 – Basic Industry and Market Research
  • 9/25 – Searching News, Trade Publications and Journals
  • 10/2 – International Business and Industry Research

  • 10/23 – Finance and Investment Research
  • 11/6 – Certificate Reception from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. (Henley Room)

What should you expect? Each session will include demonstrations of Sterne Library databases, print materials, and reputable web sites as well as effective search strategies and tips.

You will also have the chance for hands-on research practice each week and multiple chances to win Starbucks gift cards and Sterne Library travel mugs.

Still wondering if the program is for you?  Here is what a former student had to say:

Brittany Fair, Management 2013
Completed program in spring 2012

“This program has offered me resources that I can actually use in the real world – not only for work related purposes but also for everyday purposes.

I understand that individuals might be hesitant to enroll in the program because I was, but the Business Research Certificate Program was a great investment.  I encourage everyone to participate because it shows you ways to think efficiently.”
