Open Access Week (October 19-23)
The Mervyn H. Sterne Library and Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences will sponsor activities for the first international Open Access Week, October 19-23, 2009.
Open Access Week “is an opportunity to broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access to research, including access policies from all types of research funders, within the international higher education community and the general public” (Open Access Week Web site).
Open access publications are those which are freely available on the Internet for users to read, download, print, and distribute with the consent of the author and without licensing restrictions. The focus of the open access movement is broadening the reach of scientific and scholarly literature, especially research conducted with public funds. For more information about open access see “A Very Brief Introduction to Open Access” by Peter Suber.
The libraries will sponsor the following events during Open Access Week. Please join us to learn more about this important topic and add your voice to the discussion.
